Ozen House

Here, our commission was to redesign the existing stairs, which are taking up a huge space in a relatively small loft apartment. However, instead of proposing a lighter and more compact alternative, we aimed at redefining the problem: How would we maximize the area of usage, while minimizing the footprint, in such a way to increase the spaciousness of the apartment as a whole? As a matter of fact, we designed a series of cantilevered steel plates, with no contact with the ground (minimum footprint), carrying wooden horizontal surfaces with different uses, such as shelves, TV unit, and of course, stairs (maximum area of usage). We think that in terms of spaciousness, the intervention is both physical and perceptive.
